You’ve heard all the buzz about farm-to-table beef. You have visions of feeding your family robust, tasty meat that is both healthy and pleasurable to eat.
But you’re still not sure if there’s really a huge difference between buying your beef fresh from the farm and buying it at your local grocery store, which seems both more familiar and more convenient.
So you’ve got questions.
Fortunately, we’ve got answers! We understand that if you’re going to make the switch to farm-fresh beef, you want to get lots of value for your money, and you want to make sure the shift will be worth it. Here’s what you need to know.
How long does farm-fresh beef stay good?
It depends on the cut of meat you eat. Ground beef and organ meat can last 1-2 days in the fridge, while a steak or a roast can last up to 4 days.
You can freeze farm-fresh beef indefinitely, though it will lose some quality if you keep it too long. Ground beef loses some quality after four months, and steaks and roasts lose some quality after a year. However, it’s all still safe and tasty.
If you’re thinking about buying bulk beef and have never tried it before, start small. Put in an order for 1/8th of a cow. You’ll get roughly 30 pounds of ground beef, 16 pounds of steaks and ribs, and 30 pounds of roasts and other meats.
See how long it takes you and your family to eat through that amount of food and whether you’re satisfied with the quality throughout the process. You can make adjustments, ordering more later if necessary.
How different does farm-fresh beef really taste?
Grain-fed beef, the beef you find at the grocery store, tends to be rich and fatty, with fewer nutrients. Grass-fed meat will be leaner than you’re used to. The flavor is typically stronger than the flavor you get with grocery store beef. The texture will also be richer.
The taste may be a little unfamiliar at first, but most of our customers come to love it, and come to prefer it to the taste of grain-and-hormone-fed grocery store beef.
Why does farm fresh beef taste different?
The diet a cow eats influences the flavor of the meat because it influences the fat content. You might need different cooking methods to ensure it stays juicy and tender.
